Anna University History

Anna University (AU), formerly Perarignar Anna University of Technology (PAUT), is a technical university in Tamil NaduIndia. It's been ranked 5th[3] best university in India. The university encompasses within it one of the oldest technical institutes in the world and has a history spanning 218 years (as of 2012). It was renamed 'Anna University' on 4 September 1978 as a unitary university, named after C. N. Annadurai. It became an affiliating university in 2001, absorbing about 250 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Between 2007 and 2010 it was split into six universities, namely, Anna University, ChennaiAnna University of Technology, ChennaiAnna University of Technology, TiruchirappalliAnna University of Technology, CoimbatoreAnna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai. On September 14, 2011 a bill was passed to merge back the universities. Anna University has once again become a single affiliating university for engineering colleges all over Tamil Nadu from August 1, 2012.[4]

The government of Tamil Nadu established Perarignar Anna University of Technology (previous name of Anna University) on 4 September 1978 through the The Perarignar Anna University of Technology Act, 1978(Tamil Nadu Act 30 of 1978).

The new university formed with the erstwhile University of Madras's Faculty of Engineering and Technology (i.e, College of Engineering, Guindy,Alagappa College of TechnologyMadras Institute of Technology and the School of Architecture and Planning of Chennai City) as nucleus of university.

The institutes became constituent colleges of the newly formed university. It was named after former Chief Minister of Tamil NaduC. N. Annadurai.

1982: In 1982 the name Anna University was adopted, removing the words "Perarignar" and "Technology".[5]

2001: In 2001, under the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001, AU became an affiliating university, taking under its wings almost all the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. 2007: On 1 February 2007 as a result of a Government of Tamil Nadu decision, AU was split into six universities, namely, Anna University, ChennaiAnna University of Technology, ChennaiAnna University of Technology, TiruchirappalliAnna University of Technology, CoimbatoreAnna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai.[6] The institutes were formally formed between 2007 and 2010.
2011: On September 14, 2011 a bill was passed to merge back the universities.[7] However, as of February 2012, the separate universities are still operating.[8]
