About Rajasthan University

University of Rajasthan (Hindiराजस्थान विश्वविद्यालय) is a public and state university and one of the oldest university in the Indian state Rajasthan, located in the city Jaipur. It was set up on 8 January 1947 as the University of Rajputana and was given its current name in the year 1956.

University of Rajasthan is the centre of tertiary education in Rajasthan and attracts students from other parts of India and overseas. The central campus is in the city of Jaipur. The University of Rajasthan has 6 constituent colleges, 11 recognised research centres, 37 postgraduate departments and 305 affiliated colleges. The University offers 37 Ph.D. programs, 20 M.Phil. courses, 48 Master's degree courses and 14 Bachelor degree courses. It has been accredited A+ by NAAC India.

The University of Rajasthan is the oldest institution of higher learning in Rajasthan. It was established on 8 January 1947, as the University of Rajputana with the main objective of disseminating knowledge and catering to the needs of the students of Rajasthan. It had jurisdiction over the entire state. In the year 1956, the Rajputana University was renamed as the University of Rajasthan, keeping intact its enveloping jurisdiction. With the successive creation of other universities, its affiliating jurisdiction has come down to only seven districts of Rajasthan, but it is still the hub of higher education in Rajasthan paving the way for the other universities.

University of Rajasthan is a multi-faculty university and is recognized under 2f and 12B of U.G.C since its inception. Its Central Campus is spread over 285.50 acres (1.1554 km2) and the satellite campus, comprising the Constituent Colleges, is spread over 149.53 acres (0.6051 km2).

Jason Freitag, the historian and biographer of James Tod, noted in 2009 that…

The university in Rajasthan is moribund. There is no collective life on the campus - no talks, seminars, concerts. The most popular departments are commerce and the sciences, and the humanities are floundering. White ants and termites are eating away a huge collection of historical records in the university library at Jaipur, and there are no resources to save them. Some of the active professors I dealt with have side businesses (translating, history working with the tourist development ...), and their university duties are not primary among their priorities. It is not clear what will happen in the next few years, but I imagine that an even stronger stagnation may set in.[1]
